  • The Brighter Side of Things...

I'm currently writing from a beach hotel in hands down one of my favorite places in the world to visit...COSTA RICA! We're by the central Pacific Cost in a little town by a beach called Jaco. Costa Rica is big on eco-tourism. The President is very much an environmentalist so he makes sure to take care of its countries natural resources and sights. There's lots to see and explore including volcanoes, jungle, eco-parks and hotels, and huge natural parks. Costa Rica is most popular for its SURF! Which is why I'm here. The surf has been pretty incredible so far...which makes it even harder to return to NY...country like this, I could never get bored of...

Since we've arrive, my friends and I have been getting tons of sunshine. With so much sun, its not surprising that our mood has turned upside down, from frowns to smiles! Since I can't share the sun with you all, I thought I would share something else that might brighte up your day. A free giveaway! Sponsored by this wonderful sight: "The Bright Side Project".

Here's a little bit about their site and the founders:

    About

    about the bright side project
Once upon a time, it was very, very gloomy.  The skies thundered, the economy crumbled, and people only spoke to grumble. Everything looked bleak, bleak, bleak.

Until one day, shortly after a market crash and right before another round of layoffs, a girl named Miss B. came up with a terrifically bright idea.  As she later explained to her friend and business partner, Miss K., their mission would be to scour the world for the best in fashion, design, and décor.  Then, one by one and everyday, they would give it all away to some very lucky people.

This is how The Bright Side Project began on a wintry, gray day in February.

In February they gave away art for 28 days, In March they gave away 31 days of accessories.  In April, they celebrated social conscience with 30 days of eco-friendly everything.  And so on, and so on, and so on.  Suddenly things didn’t seem so bleak anymore.

In fact, metaphorically speaking, the sun started to shine 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and everyone stopped for a second to remember life is (still) beautiful and there is goodness in the world.

    about Miss B.

Miss B. is the founder and Editor in Chief of The Bright Side Project.  She has over twenty years experience as a publicist for high-end and couture brands in fashion and beauty.  This means she is very good at finding anything you could ever want—sometimes before you know you want it.

When Miss B. isn’t scouting fabulousness for The Bright Side Project, she is writing at her craftista blog, The Blah, Blah, Blahg, and taking copious pictures of flora, fauna, and fashion.  She also designs and produces all sorts of lovely things for Besotted Brand, the company she shares with Miss K.

You can win Miss B.’s heart with animals (especially the baby variety), ephemera, shoes, the color aqua, crafty tutorials, and great photography.

    about Miss K.

Miss K. is the co-owner and Editorial Director of The Bright Side Project.  She writes most of the posts on the products and brands featured daily.  She is also an attorney, wife, and mother of two young boys aged 2 and 4.  She is a skilled negotiator and an expert on dinosaurs and things with wheels.

When she isn’t writing about products, she is writing about everything else at her personal blog, Pancakes and French Fries.  Sadly, Miss K is watching her figure and therefore does not eat pancakes or French fries with any sort of regularity.  She works alongside Miss B. at Besotted Brand and writes for hire at The Poem Company.

Miss K loves hats, brooches, books, art, things that are proper, anything your grandma would love, and especially elephants.

    JIJI_bsp

Question: What does an avid surfer of Korean descent born in Lima, Peru but living in Brooklyn, New York do when she is laid off from her corporate job in finance? She takes a sewing class on a whim, finds her passion, and establishes a successful business designing and making handbags and totes. Naturally.

Friends describe Jiyoung Kim (Ji) of JiJi’s Creative Designs as a fun loving, free spirited hippy (which is exactly how I describe all my friends in finance), and with a life story as intriguing as hers, I don’t doubt the description. It is very, very unlikely that Miss B. or I will ever be as easy going, carefree, or as open to change as Kim is, but that’s okay because we can wear a new personality with Kim’s Everyday Tote .

What is so great about this tote is that it truly is an everyday tote, and that means you can carry it no matter what role you are playing. You can carry it to work (employee of the month), bring it out for drinks (social butterfly), carry your laptop to the coffee shop (aspiring writer), or toss in some diapers on the way to the park (super mom). Of course, it should be no surprise that Kim designed a bag with so many options–those are the kind of numbers you can expect from a free-spirited hippy with a finance background.

Ji Kim is giving away one Everyday Tote in Alexander Henry’s Secret Garden or Robert Kaufman’s yellow, black + white, Night * Day to one lucky winner. Please answer the following question by Friday, June 26, 2009 in order to win.

What is the most out of character thing you have ever done, barring anything x-rated or, you know, criminal?

Please start checking the winner’s box on Wednesday, July 1, 2009. Good Luck!

Go check it out and submit a response to be eligible for the giveaway! Good luck ya'll! And don't limit yourself to just this giveaway. There's a giveaway everyday so there's tons of opportunity to win!!

  • McCarren Market - aftermath!

Wow. I never imagined the amount of work and planning that would go into one street fair. I spent the whole week making bags to sell but got nowhere near the number I would have liked. In addition, the bf and I spent a large amount of time and money trying to find reasonably priced table, stools and tent.

The table was purchased at target for $35. The stools at chinatown for $10 each. And the tent was $55. There were pricier tents which collapsed and opened easier but were going for $150 and up! Being my first street fair I decided to keep my costs down. One thing I regret purchasing however are bag racks. In the craziness of preparing, I had completely skipped to plan out ways to present my bag. Oh well. You live and you learn.

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned mainly due to the weather. It was overcast all morning. By 2 pm it started drizzling and by 4pm it was officially raining. Boo to weather forecasters.

Also take into account a VERY rude customer who had not very nice things to say (which I completely do not understand, if you got nothing nice to say then don't say it at all!), by late afternoon I was not a happy camper.

Fortunately, my friend and bf were there to give me support and snapped me out of my funk. Gonna try for it again and hopefully the next one, I'll be better prepared and the weather will work in our favor.

    Onto photo's:

You can find her cards here: Peach Tree Cards

I met a wonderful woman by the name of Nordea who makes and sells soaps and other beauty products. You can find her shop here: Nordea's Soaperie. Not only was she very sweet but she had the most fantastic skin! I'm sure due to her fabulous products. We did a swap, one of my bags for some cash and some of her products. Below are some of the soaps I was able to walk away with. They smell absolutely delish. Also not included is a strawberry lip balm I purchased from her. It was hands down the freshest lip balm I had ever used. I am never buying cheap drugstore lip balm, or even store bought lip balm every again. Freshness makes such a huge difference.

  • My very first street fair! TOMORROW!

I am officially a street vendor/peddler! Woo hoo! Here are the details of my upcomoing venue below:

    What: Artists and Fleas Market!
Where: McCarren Park (Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY) - Lorimer Street entrance
    When: June 13, 2009
Who: JiJi's (link) & Peach Tree Cards (link)!

The Artists and Fleas Market is held every Saturday at McCarren Park. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the park is pretty much the epicenter of the community. Especially during the summer. At the park you can watch a soccer game or two (the players there are very VERY good), get a great work out (they have a track and various other workout areas), take your kids to McCarren pool for a dip in the pool, take your dog to the dog park, check out a restaurant or two (find a place with outdoor seating!) and of course, check out the market!

Here's a convenient event reminder for all you facebookers! (LINK)

As a special treat for all my readers, if you add the FB event and mention my blog, I'll take 10% off your order!!

About Me

  • You have found the blog of designer Jenny Kim, also known as JiJi! My designs can be found at JiJi's Etsy Boutique. I started sewing in my teens tailoring my own clothes with my mother's sewing machine. In the summer of 2008, I took my first formalized classes at Sew Fast Sew Easy in New York. Since then, I have been creating and selling my designs on Etsy. This site is dedicated to sharing with others my experiences, progress, trials and tribulations, and most importantly, to share with you my passion for sewing! I hope to meet others like myself who have an interest for sewing and selling on Etsy . I hope we can share ideas and help to encourage each other to meet our goals!
